A Life in Color and Tradition

Born in Vienna, Austria-Hungary, Julius Paul Junghanns was a painter who achieved international recognition as a traditional painter of animals and landscapes. After completing his training as a lithographer in Dresden, he pursued his studies at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. His artistic journey led him to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he studied under the animal painter Heinrich von Zügel, an experience he described as the greatest highlight of his training.

Junghanns's career was marked by significant academic appointments. At the age of 28, he was appointed as the head of the master class for animal and landscape painting at the Düsseldorf Academy. He later held a professorship at the same institution. His work has been held in various collections and museums across the globe, including locations in Berlin, Munich, Düsseldorf, London, Madrid, and Chicago.

Artistic Legacy and Later Years

Throughout his career, Junghanns was a member of several professional organizations, including the Bund Zeichnender Künstler in Munich and the Hagenbund. His reputation as a pictor antiquus—an old-style painter—was reflected in his focus on traditional subject matter. During the period of National Socialism, his works were acquired by several high-ranking figures, and he was included on the Gottbegnadeten-Liste.

Following the end of the war and a period of personal crisis, Junghanns returned to Düsseldorf in 1949 to establish a new studio. He remained an active figure in the art community, joining the Künstlergruppe in 1949. He passed away in Düsseldorf.
