The Essence of Seascape
Painted in 1975 by Gerhard Richter, Seascape is a monumental oil on canvas that measures 200 x 300 cm. The work presents a vast expanse of ocean situated beneath a uniformly overcast sky. The composition is structured into two primary horizontal bands—the sky above and the sea below—separated by a subtle horizon line. The scene is characterized by a lack of sharp details or focal points, instead utilizing tonal variations and subtle gradations of color to create an atmospheric effect. The color palette is deliberately muted and desaturated, dominated by shades of gray, blue, and white.
Technique and Visual Composition
The artwork employs a technique involving the layering of thin coats of oil paint, which results in a velvety surface texture. This method captures the quality of diffused light, contributing to the soft, hazy appearance of the scene. The visual depth is achieved through atmospheric perspective, where distant elements appear fainter and bluer. The style of the piece aligns with abstract expressionism and color field painting, prioritizing the conveyance of feeling over photographic accuracy. The overall impression is one of tranquility and stillness, depicting a serene tableau of nature.
