A Life of Color and Independence

In the quiet streets of Kampen, a girl named Johanna Petronella Catharina Antoinetta Koster began a life that would eventually wander far beyond the borders of her Dutch birthplace. Born in 1868, she was the third of eight children, and the weight of responsibility arrived early when her father passed away during her youth. This loss shaped her path, driving her toward the pursuit of a profession that could sustain both herself and her family. By her teenage years, she had moved to Dordrecht, where she first learned to guide a pencil under the tutelage of Roeland Larij. Her hunger for knowledge led her from the classrooms of Amsterdam to the academies of Rotterdam, each step refining a hand that would soon master the delicate interplay of light and pigment.

Her early career was marked by a fierce determination to exist as an independent woman in an era when many expected women to focus solely on the domestic sphere. In 1891, she stood among a group of female painters in Amsterdam, facing a press that viewed professional women with skepticism. Yet, she did not falter. A royal grant for painting in 1894 opened the doors to Paris and Brussels, allowing her to immerse herself in the radical new languages of her time. In the studios of Brussels, specifically under Ernest Blanc-Garin, she encountered the experimental spirit of movements like Les XX and La Libre Esthétique. These encounters fundamentally altered her vision.

The Language of Dots and Light

As Koster traveled through Europe, her brushwork underwent a profound transformation. The influence of Neo-Impressionism and Pointillism took hold, leading her to adopt a technique defined by small dots and dashes of color. This method allowed her to capture the flickering essence of light, a pursuit she called luminism. She did not merely paint what she saw; she sought to represent the very movement of illumination across a surface. Her work during the first two decades of the twentieth century became a study in texture and brilliance, using bright colors to breathe life into her subjects.

Her interests were as varied as her travels. She found deep inspiration in the rural rhythms of Staphorst, returning almost every year for two decades to document the lives of farmers and the quiet dignity of their work. In other moments, her gaze turned toward the ports of France or the sun-drenched landscapes of Italy, specifically San Gimignano and Positano. Her subjects shifted with her surroundings:

  • Portraits that captured the textural richness of fine fabrics.
  • Landscapes that utilized rougher, more angular shapes as she moved toward abstraction.
  • Still lifes featuring roses, sculptures, and everyday objects.
  • Cityscapes and harbor scenes reflecting her time in coastal regions.

A Wandering Legacy

Koster’s later years were a period of continued movement and adaptation. She built her own studio, a thatched house named “Honk” in Hattem, which served as a sanctuary for her creative explorations. Even as she moved between cities like Zwolle and The Hague, her connection to the earth and its people remained a constant thread in her work. She was a woman of many talents, also finding expression through needlework, wood carvings, and illustrations for magazines.

The shadows of war eventually forced her from her home in The Hague, leading her to seek refuge in Zaltbommel. Her health declined in the final years of her life, and she passed away in Heelsum in 1944. Though much of her work was overlooked for a time, her presence remains felt in the permanent collections of the Rijksmuseum and the Kröller-Müller Museum. She left behind a body of work that reflects a life lived without compromise, defined by a restless search for light and an unwavering commitment to her own artistic truth.
