The History of Corsham Court

The origins of Corsham Court reach back to the era of the Saxon kings, when the site served as a royal manor. Local tradition suggests the land was a reputed seat of Ethelred the Unready. This long lineage of importance continued through the centuries, with the estate eventually passing out of the hands of the royal family during the reign of Elizabeth I. The present 16th-century country house was built in 1582 by Thomas Smythe.

The continuity of the estate is marked by the presence of the Methuen family, who have lived within these walls since the 18th century. While the family originated in Scotland, their connection to this Wiltshire landscape has endured for generations. The house has remained in the same family for much of this period, preserving the integrity of the estate through shifting political and social eras.

The Architecture and Estate Design

The present house, a Grade I listed building, was constructed in 1582 by Thomas Smythe. This Elizabethan manor forms the core of the estate, maintaining a structural continuity that has persisted through the centuries. Near the entrance, a baroque style archway was built between 1700 and 1720, featuring ashlar piers and ball finials that mark the transition from the public approach to the private grounds.

The surrounding parkland reflects the influence of Capability Brown, who implemented a significant plan in 1761. His design utilized a ha-ha to create a subtle separation between the formal pleasure grounds and the wider park, ensuring the views from the house remained unobstructed. This landscape approach sought to integrate the architecture into a more naturalistic setting. Within this setting, a folly ruin was constructed by Nash around 1797, which incorporated medieval stonework and materials from the eighteenth-century Bath House.

The Art Collection and Old Masters

The collection at Corsham Court finds its nucleus in the paintings inherited in 1757 by Paul Methuen from his uncle, Sir Paul Methuen. These Old Masters remain integrated within the house, preserved in the very rooms they were intended to inhabit. Many of the most significant paintings and pieces of furniture have been accepted in lieu of inheritance tax, yet they are permitted to remain in situ, ensuring the continuity of the estate's visual character.

The presence of these works is felt through the dialogue between the canvases and the surrounding interior. The rooms are furnished by Robert Adam and Thomas Chippendale, creating a specific environment where the art and the decorative arts exist in a settled state. This arrangement maintains the integrity of the Methuen collection, allowing the works to be viewed within their original domestic context rather than as isolated objects.

Masterpieces of the Collection

The presence of the Old Masters within these rooms offers a quiet encounter with the weight of history. Guido Reni’s Portrait of Pope Gregory XV, painted about 1622, commands attention through its steady, formal composure. Nearby, the atmosphere shifts with David Teniers the Younger’s Holy Family in a Landscape with John the Baptist, a work from about 1656 that integrates its figures into the surrounding scenery with a practiced hand. These works exist here as part of a collection that has remained largely intact within the Methuen estate for generations.

In other corners, the intimacy of the human form is captured with remarkable clarity. Sofonisba Anguissola’s Three children with dog, dating from about 1590, possesses a directness that invites a long, silent observation of its subjects. This sense of place extends beyond the immediate surroundings of the house to the wider world through Cristóbal de Villalpando’s View of the Plaza Mayor of Mexico City, executed about 1695. Such works allow the viewer to experience the breadth of the collection, from the domestic and the sacred to the expansive urban vistas of a distant continent.
