Cavarozzi’s bravura depiction of fruit and foliage in a simple basket against a monochrome ground evokes a famous picture by Caravaggio (Basket of Fruit, Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, Milan). Cavarozzi was a leading exponent of still-life painting in both Italy and Spain, where he accompanied the nobleman Giovanni Battista Crescenzi in 1617–19.
