The Convergence of Circuitry and Form
In the 2014 work Techno-Alchemy, a dense arrangement of technological components is mounted directly onto a wall. The composition consists of a tangled network of wires, hard drives, and glowing computer indicators. These elements are not organized in a linear or functional manner; instead, they writhe and stretch across the surface in a manner reminiscent of biological structures. The color palette is defined by the specific hues of the electrical components: blue, green, yellow, and purple. These colors emerge from the light emitted by the indicators and the insulation of the various cords. The arrangement creates a rhythmic pattern that mimics the movement of cellular structures or the undulating forms of bioluminescent sea life.
Materiality and Compositional Elements
The sculpture utilizes industrial and digital materials to construct its organic shapes. The physical presence of the piece is defined by the following components:
- Intertwining colored wires and cords
- Hard drives and electronic hardware
- LED indicators and light sources
- Wall-mounted structural support
The proximity of the components creates a sense of density. The wires form a complex, three-dimensional mass against the wall. This method of assembly transforms rigid, manufactured objects into a singular entity that resembles an alien animal or a piece of religious iconography. The light emitted from the internal components provides the primary source of visual definition, casting shadows that add depth to the intertwined cords.
The Intersection of Technology and Biology
The work explores the tension between the synthetic and the organic. By using commercial technology to replicate biomorphic shapes, the piece creates a visual language that bridges the gap between the digital and the natural. The light sculptures function as an ecosystem of light and shadow. The specific use of light mimics the soft glow found in deep-sea organisms, yet the source of that light is strictly technological. This creates a sense of temporal displacement, where the viewer encounters something that feels both futuristic and ancient. The result is a physical manifestation of the relationship between human-made systems and the biological patterns found in nature.
