The Architecture of Rajakartano
The Aine Art Museum occupies the Rajakartano building in central Tornio, Finland. Designed by architect Matti Porkka and completed in 1985, the structure is defined by its distinctive triangular skylights. This light enters the space to illuminate the interior, which the museum shares with the Tornio City Library. The building sits on the western bank of the Tornio River, positioned near the Swedish border. Outside, a sculpture park surrounds the premises, and a new Sculpture Trail is scheduled to open in 2025.
The museum functions as a meeting place for fine arts, housing both the Aine Art Museum collection and the Aine Pictorial Art Foundation collection. These collections are maintained through an agreement between the City of Tornio and the Foundation. The museum's physical presence is tied to the history of Eila and Veli Aine, whose private interest in Finnish art led to the establishment of the Foundation in 1974.
