L'Ucraina è uno Stato dell'Europa orientale con una superficie di 603628 km² in cui risiedono 42 322 028 abitanti al 2018 e la sua capitale è Kiev. Ha uno sbocco sul Mar Nero a sud e confina con la Russia a est, con la Bielorussia a nord, con Polonia, Slovacchia e Ungheria a ovest e con Romania e Moldavia a sud-ovest. La lingua ufficiale è l'ucraino. Abbastanza diffuso nelle regioni orientali e nel sud il russo, che nella Repubblica autonoma di Crimea è anche lingua ufficiale assieme al tataro di Crimea. La Crimea, assieme alla città autonoma di Sebastopoli, ha dichiarato unilateralmente l'indipendenza l'11 marzo 2014 ed è stata annessa alla Russia, anche se il governo ucraino non riconosce nessun atto del parlamento della Crimea, che è stato sciolto dalle autorità ucraine il 16 marzo e dal 20 marzo viene considerato dall'Ucraina "territorio temporaneamente occupato dalla Federazione Russa". Tuttavia dall'8 settembre 2014 le guardie di frontiera ucraine presenti nell'oblast' di Cherson richiedono ai cittadini ucraini il passaporto o la carta d'identità ucraina se si recano nella penisola. Il 7 aprile 2014 anche parte dell'Oblast' di Donec'k ha dichiarato unilateralmente l'indipendenza dall'Ucraina in seguito a un referendum e pochi giorni dopo l'autonominato presidente della Repubblica Popolare di Doneck Pavel Gubarev ha dichiarato la futura annessione alla Russia. Allo stesso modo parte dell'Oblast' di Luhans'k ha dichiarato la sua indipendenza come Repubblica Popolare di Lugansk. Il 27 giugno 2014 il presidente ucraino Petro Porošenko a Bruxelles ha firmato l'Accordo di associazione tra l'Ucraina e l'UE.

Lviv National Art Gallery

Borys Voznytsky Lviv National Art Gallery , a leading art museum in Ukraine, has over 60,000 artworks in its collection, including works of Polish, Italian, French, German, Dutch and Flemish, Spanish, Austrian and other European artists. The gallery is "successor" to a Polish institution, Lwowska Galeria Sztuki, founded in 1907 as the city's municipal museum. The Provenance of its current stock comes from a multiplicity of largely Polish sources, including the early purchase by the then city magistrature of the private collection of Jan Jakowicz. The collection was subsequently expanded through donations of parts of the Władysław Łoziński and Bolesław Orzechowicz collections. In 1940, after the city of Lviv/Lwów had been occupied by the Soviet Union, the Soviet government ordered the seizure of private property. As a result, works from the Lubomirski Museum, integrated with the Ossolineum since 1823, the Borowski Library and several other private collections, are currently in the possession of the gallery. All these works were, until the 1939 Invasion of Poland and subsequent state appropriation, the property of the Polish state, private Polish collectors, and of the Polish Roman Catholic church and, arguably, remain such. In early 2005 the Lubomirski collection of 14th - 18th century European art was transferred to its new premises - the renovated Palace of Count Potocki, a former governor of Austrian Galicia. A masterpiece by the 17th-century French artist, Georges de La Tour, is on permanent display.
