Winterthur / Switzerland

Winterthur is a city in the canton of Zürich in northern Switzerland. With over 110,000 residents it is the country's sixth-largest city by population, and is the ninth-largest agglomeration with about 140,000 inhabitants. Located about 20 kilometres northeast of Zürich, Winterthur is a service and high-tech industrial satellite city within Greater Zürich. The official language of Winterthur is Swiss Standard German, but the main spoken language is the local variant of the Alemannic Swiss German dialect. Winterthur is usually abbreviated as Winti in the local dialect and by its inhabitants. Winterthur is connected to Germany by direct trains and has links to Zurich Airport. It is also a regional transport hub: the A1 motorway from Geneva through to St. Margrethen connects in Winterthur with the A4 motorway heading north toward Schaffhausen and the A7 motorway heading close to the Swiss-German border at Kreuzlingen. There are also roads leading to other places such as Turbenthal. The railway station is the fifth busiest railway station in Switzerland, and is 20 minutes away by train from Zürich.

The Reinhart Collection formed by Oskar Reinhart is now held in a museum in his old house, "Am Römerholz" in Winterthur, Zurich Canton, Switzerland, as well as the Museum Oskar Reinhart in the centre of Winterthur. It belongs to the Swiss Confederation, Federal Office of Culture . The collection owns paintings by artists including Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Eduard Manet, Paul Cézanne, Eugène Delacroix, Théodore Géricault, Camille Corot, Honoré Daumier, Jean-François Millet, Gustave Courbet, Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley, Matthias Grünewald, Lukas Cranach, Vincent Van Gogh and Pieter Breughel the Elder . The villa is building of 1915, designed by Maurice Turrettini.

The Kunst Museum Winterthur is an art museum in Winterthur, Switzerland run by the local Kunstverein. From its beginnings, the activities of the Kunstverein Winterthur were focused on "contemporary art" - first Impressionism, then Post-Impressionism and especially Les Nabis, through post-World War II and recently created works by Richard Hamilton, Mario Merz and Gerhard Richter.

Oskar Reinhart was a Swiss arts patron and art collector, born in Winterthur. His collection now fills two museums, the Kunst Museum Winterthur | Reinhart am Stadtgarten in the centre of Winterthur, and the Oskar Reinhart Collection "am Roemerholz" at his former home, Am Römerholz, in Winterthur.
